It is cold outside today, a mere 253 degrees kelvin outside the house. For those of you less familiar with the absolute zero temperature scale of kelvin, that's equivalent to -20 degrees celcius. Yesterday, I took the kids outside while I was shovelling the beautiful white and powdery snow.
I'm not some freaky cold-loving amoeba but I do enjoy a little of this weather each year. It brings a contrast to the increadible heat of summer in this desert region, which helps reduce the amount of complaining I will subject you too during those times. The crunchy cold snow, the blanket of white that makes everything look clean and new; of course it is especially enjoyable watching little kids go nutty.
A big snowstorm is a scary event as well. Looking towards the lower mainland, 80,000 people without power, schools closed, roads a mess thanks in part to the infamous "All Season" tires. The incredible cold makes a power outage quite difficult, since even a gas or oil furnace is only useful when it has electricity to blow the air around your house. A minor fender-bender can become a big problem with a car full of small kids or persons with limited mobility.
Well today it's a snow day. I'll stay home, do my work and hope that everyone is driving safely. I'm sure the power will be restored to the lower mainland soon and as the weather clears, so will the roads. Schools at the coast will reopen and life will return to what we consider normal.
Enjoy.
