Skype via Wireless - technology or toy?

I've been waiting for this to come out for awhile. As one whom uses Skype extensively, I have long wished for a skype phone that didn't require any sort of base station connected to a skype enabled PC.

This wireless Skype phone from Netgear would be a great asset around the office. Connecting to the wireless 802.11b or 802.11g enabled wireless router, I would be able to send and receive calls to and from regular phone users, cell users AND Skype users anywhere my office wireless extends to.

In most areas, this is little more than a cool toy, but in major urban areas that are seeing city-wide wireless networks popping up, this device could replace the need for a typical cell phone. There's not a lot of these places out there yet, but there are groups that are working to make openly available (not free) wide area wireless networks conveniently available to us.

I'm hoping this will be more than just a cool geek toy that doesn't take hold. It has great potential to make wireless VOIP phone service inexpensively available to us all. For the price, I'm not ready to pick one of these up yet, but I'll be watching. We'll just have to wait and see what the future brings!
