What the heck is up with Opus?

I didn't know it at the time, but March 15th was an exciting day in the music world. Months went by and little did I know, someone out there had launched a new project directed right at me. Their goal? To provide me a great service, excellent community and quality exposure, without compromising the one thing most important to me.... my rights!

Enough mystery. I'm talking about Project Opus. If you don't know what I'm talking about here.... let me shine a little clarity into your life.

When I'm Free

It starts with music. Guys like are looking for simple ways to let people click and play our songs from our own website or anywhere we can get away with embedded content.

Free

We're also looking for a simple, flexible player that will let us build a playlist of our tracks that we can implant into our sites, as you can see if you visit my myspace. Ok - but before you actually click that link, they also provide a crisp quality community page artists can use to post all of their tracks, photos, blogs and shows AND, perform the necessary evil of any artist... SELL our MUSIC!

Yesterday I was given an opportunity to speak at length with Kay Thody, Co-Founder of Project Opus. As a musician looking for opportunities to expose the world to my art, I was curious to find out what they felt was most important to guys like me. Bang... there it was coming through my phone.

-- No Exclusivity required. They understand artists need multiple avenues to get their music out there.
-- Give up nothing. They don't take or claim any rights to artists music, which is very important!
-- No limits. Upload as much music as you've got, stream it to millions of fans.
-- No fees. No monthly costs, no hidden fees. They keep a portion from track sales, but their focus is on finding ways to put cash into artists pockets... so we can focus on music instead of our day jobs.
-- Their catch phrase is "Local Music Everywhere". I guess they like independant music!

Ok... by now you have some idea what Project Opus is. Why am I telling you all this?

If you remember, awhile back (March 16th incidentally) I signed up for myspace. I was looking for places to post my music videos and the audio tracks from my CD "Free", and also get some community going. Myspace seemed like the ideal choice, and indeed it has been a pretty good experience overall. What I've learned over the last few months, however, is that I also need something a little more organized, a little more crisp, and not meaning any disrespect to myspace, more reliable. When my friend Alec from Sugarblade announced they were going to use Project Opus to post their songs from their newly released CD, I was immediately intrigued. Now that I've been enjoying the site for almost a month, it's time to do what I do and tell the world about it!

Take a minute out of your day and check out my Project Opus pages. If you're a music fan, sign up and spend a couple bucks downloading my tracks and let me know what you think of the experience. If you're an artist see what they can do for you.
