Recently, having had the pleasure of interviewing Suzi Rawn, at the end of it she suggested that I come out to see King Size Suzi perform at the TRU Grand Hall. Since I had planned to track down one of their live shows, and my wife was off work, we agreed that this would be a great opportunity.
We were both shocked at the demographics of the crowd that had assembled for the show. I had known it was an "All Ages" show, but I've never seen so many 6-12 year old girls at an all ages local rock performance. Although there were a lot in that group, the crowd was truly and deeply varied. There were many in the audience with more years of experience than I have yet been able to earn. Even more shocking than the diverse demographic, was the power of the crowd.
The opening band was Stowaway, a Kamloops based Metal/Punk Rock band with a lot of energy typical to the style and sound. They really did a great job of priming the crowd for Suzi. The crowd got right into their act and took to jumping around to mimic the passion of the vocalist, Josh Marsh.
When it was time for Suzi's band to hit the stage, the wide range of voices cheering for King Size Suzi sounded huge. In my youth I went to quite a number of local acts, and I've never heard a crowd quite as exciting to be in as it was tonight. I guess the trick is to get a lot of young girls out to your shows; they've really got lungs!
I wasn't sure what to expect when King Size Suzi hit the stage. While I did expect a good show, I think I can say I got a great show instead. They really picked their set list for the crowd; a great mix of music. We heard hits from her time on Canadian Idol. We heard Led Zeppelin, Trooper, The Killers, Nirvana and not in any way to be diminished, the true King Size Suzi.
After a great encore performance, there was a huge lineup outside the grand hall for Suzi's autograph signing. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the annoying camera guy with the killer spotlight, but I suppose he was only doing his job; it comes with the territory eh?
